Pita Bread is a yeast-leavened round flatbread baked from wheat flour, common in the Mediterranean, Middle East and neighbouring areas.

Warm fragrant homemade bread is obviously superior to store-bought one. Once you get the hang of it, it’s not difficult to make pita bread at home. This homemade bread recipe is easy to make and requires a few ingredients. Knead a simple dough, let it rise and experience the magic of fresh, warm, perfectly puffy homemade pita bread.

Pita bread dough is freezer friendly. The dough can be prepared ahead of time. Once, it has risen, you can store it in the fridge until you need it.

Pita bread is used to make falafel, shawarma, hummus or pita pockets.


Ingredients for the pita bread

  • 200 gm wheat flour
  • 3 gm dry yeast
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • Warm Water to make the dough

How to make bread dough

In a large mixing bowl take flour. Add yeast sugar salt and oil.

Whisk the ingredients. Add lukewarm water to make a soft moist dough. Cover the bowl with a cling.

Keep in a warm place. Let it sit till double in size.

Punch lightly. Divide into 4 equal size balls, and cover the balls with a damp cloth.

Roll out one ball with a rolling pin into an 8 to 9-inch diameter, and about a quarter-inch thick, dusting with flour. Repeat with the other balls of dough.

Preheat a pan, on medium heat carefully lift the dough circle and place it on the pan.
After a minute or 2, the dough should be nicely puffed.
Turn and cook on the other side.
The pita should be pale with only a few browns speaks.


Transfer the warm pita to a napkin-lined basket and cover it so the bread stays soft.
Repeat with the rest of the dough balls.

It can be also baked in an oven on a baking sheet on both sides.
