No Oil Sweet-Sour Awla (gooseberry) Pickle

No oil sweet-sour awla (gooseberry) pickle that is passed down from our grandma’s generation to generation. It tastes best with our spicy meals.

Gooseberry Pickle

Gooseberry is available in two sizes small and big, In this awla pickle recipe, I have used small gooseberry (awla). Instead of small ones, you can use the big one also but the smaller one tastes better in the pickle.

This pickle is an easy, simple no-fuss tasty sweet pickle recipe that gives a sweet and sour taste.

Awla

Wash and dry the awla

Boil Awla

In a deep pan add 1 cup of water and awla ,cook for 10 minutes till the awla are little soft

Awla Pickle

Deseed the dates add little vinegar and grind to a fine paste. Mix all ingredients with awla .

Awla Pickle

Add mint leaves,cook on medium flame till thick and pouring consistency.

Cook everything together till thick and pouring consistency, remember one thing as the pickle cools down it will become thicker. Do not the older the pickle, the better it tastes. I have ground the dates to a fine paste as dates paste gives a nice texture and taste to the pickle. You can add whole deseeded dates also it is perfectly your choice.

Though I have used gooseberry (awala) it can be substituted with raw mangoes or dry fruits. Awala and mangoes are available in season, with dry fruits you can make all year-round.

The big gooseberry can be used to make grated awla candy , which can be used as a mouth freshener after food to help in digestion.

Preparation time: 10 min
Cook Time: 40 min
Total Time: 50 min
Servings: 1-litre bottle

Ingredients:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar or Brown Vinegar 400 gm
  • Small Gooseberry 400 gm
  • Jaggery 400 gm
  • Dates 250 gm
  • Ginger 1/8 cup finely chopped
  • Garlic 2 Tablespoon finely chopped
  • Mint leaves a handful
  • Red Chilli Powder 1Tsp
  • Cumin Powder 1 Tsp
  • Chaat Powder 1/2 Tsp
  • Salt To Taste

Instructions:

  • Wash Gooseberry add 1 cup water cook for 10 min till a little soft.
  • Deseed Dates, add a little water grind to a fine paste.(if u want u can add just deseeded dates without grinding also.)
  • Mix all ingredients and cook till thick and pouring consistency. Keep stirring in between.
  • Cook till the pickle is thick , taste and adjust the seasoning . Off the flame.
  • Remember as the pickle will cool it will thicken so make it a little less thick than the consistency you want.
  • Cool and store in a clean glass jar.
  • It stays for a year or more.No need to refrigerate.

    Note: U can substitute awla with raw mango pieces or mixed dry fruits like dry figs, dry apricots walnuts almonds raisins blackcurrants. The cooking method will be the same. For dry fruits pickle , as soon as it comes to boil mix everything .
